Brendan Fraser plays John Crowley, a biotechnology executive whose two youngest children were afflicted with Pompe disease or acid maltase deficiency. Along with his wife Aileen (Keri Russell), he raises money for research scientist Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford), forming a company to develop a drug to save his children's lives. Dr. Stonehill is based off of real life doctor Yuan-Tsong Chen.[3]
The film centers on the Crowleys' two dying children, aged 9 and 7. In real life, most children with Pompe disease would die before age 2. There is also a juvenile and adult form which can present at almost any age. Those in the real story were 15 months and 7 days old when they got sick. They were 5 and 4 years old when treatment began.
Adapted by Robert Nelson Jacobs from a nonfiction book by the journalist Geeta Anand, the film is also an examination of how medical research is conducted and financed.
John Tyree (Channing Tatum) a young soldier from the Army Special Forces, is lying on the ground in his combat gear with multiple gunshot wounds, thinking about Frankey Bignall. Coins begin to fall over him as he recalls a childhood trip to the U.S. Coin mint. He goes on to compare himself to a coin in the United States Military and states that the last thing he thought about before he blacked out, was "You".
In 2000, John is on leave when he meets Savannah Lynn Curtis (Amanda Seyfried), a college student on spring break. In a matter of days, Savannah and John fall in love. John meets Savannah's family as well as her neighbor, Tim Wheddon (Henry Thomas) and Tim's autistic son, Alan (Luke Benward), who looks up to Savannah. Savannah meets and befriends John's father, a reclusive man who is only interested in his coin collection. John tells Savannah that his father has always been obsessed with coins and has not been much of a father to John, whose mother is not in the picture. Savannah mentions to John, that his father, like Alan, may have autism. This upsets John, who believes Savannah is calling his father retarded. He is so caught up in his anger that he gets into a fight with Savannah's rich neighbor, Randy (Scott Porter), accidentally punching Tim in the process. John apologizes to Tim the next day and leaves Savannah a note, seeking her forgiveness before his leave comes to an end. Savannah gets the note, and they spend one last day together. John returns to the army and he and Savannah begin a long distance relationship through handwritten letters. John believes that year will be his final year of enlistment, but, following the September 11 attacks, is torn between returning home and his sense of duty. He is given a weekend off, which he spends with Savannah and her family as well as with his father. He asks Savannah for her opinion on whether or not he should re-enlist, and she tells him to do what he feels is right. Like the rest of the soldiers in his unit, John chooses to re-enlist.
Over the next two years, John faces increasingly dangerous missions and begins to live almost entirely for Savannah's letters. John and Savannah find themselves drifting apart. Finally, Savannah, sad but resigned, sends John a Dear John letter, informing him that she has become engaged to someone else. John is deeply depressed and frustrated by the news, and believes she is engaged to Randy. On a mission, he enters a dangerous area and is shot several times by an enemy. His captain suggests that John go home and spend time with his father, but John, still upset about Savannah, he chooses to re-enlist again. He decides that he will make a career out of the Army and stay enlisted for as long as possible. For the next four years John takes part in many missions with his new unit spanning from the early years of the invasion of Iraq to the current resurgent conflicts in Afghanistan. While stationed in Qatar, John is informed after another mission that he is being sent home, because his father suffered a sever stroke and was not found until days after the stroke, John feels guilt that maybe if he was there the outcome for his father would be better. The Doctor assures him that his presence and quicker medical attention would do little to help his father due to the severity of the stroke. John spends the last few days of his father's life by his side, and writes him a letter. His father has difficulty opening it, so John reads it to him. It is then that the viewers find out that John's speech at the beginning of the film addressed his father, not Savannah. He and his father connect in a tearful moment, and his father dies. John decides to go see Savannah, and discovers she married Tim, not her rich friend. Savannah tells him Tim has cancer, and is not allowed to leave the hospital. She says that the only way he can come home is by having an experimental drug that they cannot afford. John visits Tim in the hospital, where Tim apologizes to John, confesses he has always loved Savannah & he is at peace for his Son will have a mother and will be cared for. Tim also confesses that Savannah still loves John, he wishes she loved him the same way but accepts what can never be. Late that evening after reconnecting with Savannah John finally says goodbye to her, forcing Savannah to terms with the fact she has lost John, bringing her to tears. John then sells his father's coin collection, although keeping the very first mule coin that was the key element to their bond when he was a boy and marked the start of his father obsession with coin collecting that would later become a wedge in their relationship as John got older. He donates the money from the sale anonymously to finance Tim's operation. The next scene shows John back with his unit using the mule coin he kept for "fate." John then gets an unexpected letter from Savannah. In the letter, Savannah writes about how she knows that John sold his father's coin collection to help Tim with his operation and thanks him for doing so. Tim dies after two months. She expresses that she still wonders where John is and what he is going through but accepts that she lost the right to know a long time ago. Moved by Savannah's letter, John gets a new lease on life and decides to leave the army after his last tour. In the last scene of the film, John walks a bicycle down the block, and stops to chain it up. At that moment Savannah in the cafe behind him turns and spots him, John turns and they lock eyes through the Cafe's glass plate window. Savannah exits the cafe and embraces him.
Officer De Ming is the pinnacle of modern law enforcement. Courteous. Courageous. Committed.
Almost human.
Designed to handle assignments too dangerous for traditional methods, De Ming is the first in the TN Research Bureau’s "K Series"—a revolutionary cybernetic organism programmed with a sophisticated social conscience.
Sent to a remote town as part of a covert training operation, De Ming is placed under the supervision of the local police captain, Xu Dachun. Xu’s mission: facilitate De Ming’s integration into the community while protecting the secret of his young protege’s true identity.
Charmed with a talent for delivering both justice and compassion, De Ming is quick to win the hearts of the town residents—though none more completely than that of Su Mei, a fellow officer who also happens to be the object of the captain’s secret affection.
Nothing in De Ming’s programming has prepared him for this.
But affairs of the heart are put on hold when word arrives that one of De Ming’s cybernetic siblings, the K-88, has disappeared after suffering a critical neural meltdown.
Together, the two men hunt down and confront the malfunctioning cyborg in a spectacular clash of artificial wills that leaves the captain scarred, and De Ming confused and conflicted about his role in human society.
Mission completed, the consequences of De Ming’s actions continue to haunt the young cyborg. The captain’s behavior has become increasingly strange and erratic since the battle with the K-88, a fact that De Ming feels compelled to hide from co-workers and superiors. Su Mei’s behavior is no less troubling as she seems incapable of understanding that as a machine he is unable to love her in the way she so desperately desires.
Seok-tae runs away with a hugh diamond of his gang and comes to Sisily, a peaceful village. Yang-e runs after him to get the diamond back and finds Seok-tae's trail in Sisily. But all the town people lie about everything. These people turn out to be scarier than a ghost!
In Ogden Marsh, Iowa, Dr. Judy Dutton finishes paperwork at the local hospital alongside employee Becca Darling while her husband, Sheriff David Dutton, enjoys a local high school baseball game. Dutton’s deputy, Russell Clank, spots Rory Hamill, a resident, entering the outfield with a gun. David tries to get him to drop his weapon but is forced to shoot and kill Rory. David and Judy begin to notice strange behavior in other town residents; they are slow to respond to questions and repetitive in their answers. The next night, Bill Farnum, a local farmer, kills his wife, Deardra and son, Nicholas.
David and Russell investigate a dead soldier who is found in the woods and eventually find a crashed plane that has leaked a toxin into the water supply. Infected residents become extremely aggressive, attacking and killing other people. David tries to convince Judy to leave town but they are captured by soldiers and taken to a temporary military facility at the high school. Judy says that they are being checked for fevers and speculates the infection is a virus. An alert goes off when Judy is examined and she is taken away to be quarantined. She tries to explain that her fever is due to pregnancy, but is ignored and sedated. She wakes up strapped to a gurney as the perimeter of the facility is breached. The military personnel evacuates, leaving her and a room full of infected patients behind, including Becca.
Meanwhile, David escapes from a group of people being released and rejoins Russell. The two go to the high school and get there just in time to save Judy and Becca from the infected high school principal Ben Sandborn, who is killing the patients in their beds. The group begins walking out of town, hiding from both the infected and the military along the way. During their elusion of the military, the group is ambushed by a group of infected at a car wash and Becca is killed. Eventually, Russell begins to show signs of infection and then sacrifices himself so that David and Judy can escape.
David and Judy arrive at a truck stop to collect supplies and hopefully find a working vehicle. They learn that the military also killed people who were not infected. They survive another encounter with the infected and escape in a truck as Ogden Marsh is destroyed. David and Judy reach Cedar Rapids. A satellite view of the Earth shows the words “initiate containment protocol” as they are entering city limits, as well as the name and population of Cedar Rapids.

We just got back from the launch of the facelifted Proton Persona, which is officially called the Proton Persona Elegance. Available in three trim levels – Base Line, Medium Line and High Line – the Persona Elegance is powered by the familiar 1.6-litre Campro IAFM engine with 110 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 148 Nm of torque from 4000 rpm. Buyers can choose between a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual, but the High Line model only comes with the auto ‘box.
Although output remains, the Campro IAFM in the Persona Elegance comes with a new 32 bit ECU from Continental, which also supplied the previous 16 bit version. According to a Proton source, the new 32 bit ECU has more capabilities compared to the older 16 bit version – capable of more inputs, you can configure more parameters, and it can also interconnect with more systems such as “talking” to a Body Control Module such as the one in the Exora.
It is more of a future-proofing and cost-effectiveness move. Torque and power output remains the same as before. Firstly, Siemens VDO have been moving their global ECU manufacturing to 32 bit being the minimum, so it is not feasible for Proton to continue ordering 16 bit ECUs when the 32 bit version can be had at a far more competitive price. This move is also in preparation for the new Project Phoenix engine that we will soon see in Protons, which will require the capabilities of the new ECU.
UPDATE: Since we first published this article we’ve received more information on the new Persona Elegance. The changes go beyond just an aesthetic make-over. We already know there’s a new bodykit, front grille, bumpers and new LED tail lamps. But beyond that, here’s what’s different:
The original story continues below…
There are a couple of changes to the exterior. As all of you already know from our previous reveals, the Persona Elegance comes with a new rear lamp cluster, now with LED brake lights. The nine LEDs are arranged in two rows – four up and five down. All trims except for the Base Line come with a bodykit, slim rear spoiler and foglamps, although the turning lamps on the side mirrors (illuminates in a cool light bar form) and chrome door handles are standard across the board.
Up front, the facelifted Persona uses the same nose as the Gen 2 CPS along with its “black out” headlamp housing, but with a different grille design. The Proton logo and its “wings” is pushed up to the top of the grille while the Gen 2 CPS has a central emblem. The 15-inch rim design is also new, although the 195/60 size of the tyres are unchanged. As before, the Base Line makes do with steel rims and hubcaps.
Inside, the most apparent change is the replacement of the previous custom designed audio head unit for a conventional single-DIN unit, once again by Blaupunkt. The USB compatible unit should be easier to operate than before with minimal and large buttons, and all trims but the Base Line get steering wheel controls. The meter cluster graphics are also new, now with white numbering and red needles plus a red inner ring, much more “premium looking” than the plain orange dials used before. Proton also says that the angle of rear seat has been changed for improved comfort.
Medium and High Line cars get a GPS navigation set stuck on the windscreen, driver’s seat height adjuster and electric side mirrors. Only the High Line gets leather seats and trim (Base and Medium Line sports a new fabric material), cruise control and remote release for the trunk.
Safety kit wise, the High Line comes with ABS and EBD, two airbags and two pre-tensioner seatblets. Out of this, the Medium Line only gets a driver’s airbag and pre-tensioner seatbelt, while the Base Line gets none of the above.
Here is the price list for the Persona Elegance:
Base Line (M) RM46,499
Base Line (A) RM49,499
Medium Line (M) RM52,999
Medium Line (A) RM55,999
High Line (A) RM59,499
Proton’s latest is available in two new colours – Chiffon Green and Bronze Garnet – in addition to silver and black. Brilliant Red is a colour exclusive to the High Line. Now in showrooms and ready for booking, the Persona Elegance comes with a 2-year/50,000 km manufacturer’s warranty plus a 3-year/125,000 km extended warranty programme – that’s a total of 5 years.
Pictures from the launch this morning, studio images, a video and a full scan of the brochure showing the equipment list of all variants are after the jump.
